Devotional #343
“God is Always at Work”
July 12, 2020

Life does not always go like we expect.  So many times we make plans, and things turn out in an entirely different way.   It is easy to forget that God is at work…always at work.  You have only to look at some of the stories in the Bible to be reminded of His plans and His presence.  I think of Noah, Joseph, Ruth, and many more.

I heard a story related recently that perfectly illustrated how God can be working in ways that we never understand, until much later.   The speaker shared, “I received a letter from a pastor who leads a church not far from Jacksonville, Florida.  He told me of a time that he and his new bride were attending Asbury Seminary in Kentucky in 1977.  It was a place where they held every spring, a Christian music festival…But as he wrote to me, he said that in 1977, they had decided at the seminary to discontinue the event.  But he and his new bride felt called to do the work.”  They went on to hold the festival.  The speaker went on, “And then he said the night came, the culminating evening on Saturday night, while he and his bride were walking through the camp.  It was raining, and they were disappointed. They thought it had all been for naught.  And then the pastor wrote, “And that’s because I didn’t know that that night a future Vice President of the United States would be giving his life to Jesus Christ.”

And Mike Pence went on to say, “The lesson in this letter was: Even when things don’t seem like they’re going the way we expected, they’re going the way He expected.”  Pence was speaking at the recent worship service at First Baptist Church in Dallas.  He closed with these words.

“And I believe with all my heart, on this Celebrate Freedom Sunday and every day, that if we will but hold fast to Him, we’ll see our way through these challenging times, we will restore our nation’s health, we will renew our freedom, and we will inspire people across this land with our witness of the love and compassion and strength that comes in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.”

I can certainly believe that many of us are experiencing circumstances right now that we never expected.  These are indeed
trying times.  But I also believe that God is at work.  The Bible proves to me that He is always at work.  And I also believe Pence’s eloquent words that we will see our way through by holding fast to Almighty God.  May God bless our nation, our leaders, and ourselves, as He continues to work out His will and His way.

1 Corinthians 12:6  “There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone, it is the same God at work.”
