Devotional #344
“We Know How it Ends”
July 19, 2020

If you are like me, you have read books that have been made into movies.  There is a long standing argument over whether you should read the book before you see the movie, or vice-versa.  In my own experience, the books have always proved much better than the movies.  There are just more subtleties, nuances, intricate plots, and deep characterizations, that can be made on the page, that are not limited to a two hour time slot.  And, if you are like me, there have been many times I have been disappointed in the movie, after having read the book.

I have also questioned how much leeway the screenwriters and producers have when bringing a book to life.  As an artist, I can sympathize with an author whose work has been “Hollywooded” up, and changed to fit a certain mold, expectation, or time frame.  I have enjoyed watching the “Lord of the Rings” series of movies.  I have read the books however, and there are vast changes made in the movies that do not appear in the books.  I have also seen movies where the ending has been changed.  In the book, the hero may die, but on screen, he lives to fight another day…perhaps, so a sequel can be in the works!  I also understand, that the bottom line is money, and only what drives sales, will be produced.

As Christians, we hopefully, have all read the “book”.  The bible contains some of the most interesting and intricate plots and stories ever told.  I know there have been numerous adaptations of various stories made into movies…some good, some bad.  But nothing compares to opening the pages, and letting God speak to us through His marvelous inspired words.  And the best part is, we know how the story ends!  And no one can change that.  Amen!

“Now He said to them, “These are my words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms, must be fulfilled.”  Luke 24:44
